Life on Hold (2022) by Amit Kaushik

The film 'Life on Hold' is based in Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, which has been recently declared as a tiger reserve. The film presents how the villagers wait for compensation and speak up about the questions of injustice, exclusion, and ambiguities in the conservation-induced relocation processes in India. When I heard the word "hold" from the villagers for the first time, I asked what it meant to them. They explained that they had not received the full compensation and the government had put a hold on their compensation money. To get the full compensation, they have to first break down their houses and clean the surface. Breaking down their ancestral houses and moving out to an unknown place show the sense of trauma that many families have to go through in relocation practices in India. The film presents how leaving home is an opportunity for some, but for some a world full of uncertainties and risks. The displacement of villages for conservation not only changes household conditions and social institutions but also how people interpret and interact with nature.
